Sleep Positions & Health

Left-Side Sleeping

  • Acid Reflux: Research shows that sleeping on your left side is linked to shorter acid exposure and faster esophageal clearance compared to right-side sleeping.
  • Constipation: Gravity can help move waste through the ileocecal valve, which may ease constipation.
  • Pregnancy: This position enhances blood flow to the placenta, providing better oxygen and nutrients for your baby.
  • Note for Heart Conditions: Left-side sleeping can cause the heart to shift. If you have heart failure, sleeping on your right side may be more beneficial.

Right-Side Sleeping

  • Heart Health: In right-side sleeping, the heart is stabilized by the mediastinum (the thin tissue between the lungs), leading to minimal changes in heart activity. This stability may be advantageous for individuals with heart failure.

Fetal Position and Stomach Sleeping

  • Snoring: Both the fetal position and stomach sleeping can help reduce snoring.
  • Pain Considerations: Sleeping on your stomach may lead to neck and back pain. Using a pillow under your lower belly can help alleviate low back discomfort.

Back Sleeping

  • Alignment: Sleeping on your back allows gravity to align your body evenly over your spine, reducing pressure on your back and joints.
  • Extra Support: Placing a pillow behind your knees can help support your lower back’s natural curve.

Side Sleeping for Shoulder Pain

  • Guidance: If you experience shoulder pain, avoid sleeping on the affected side. Instead, sleep on the opposite side with your top shoulder and arm resting on the pillow to help reduce neck and shoulder discomfort.
